Adam Haupt holds a PhD in Media Studies and is an Associate Professor in the Centre for Film & Media Studies at the University of Cape Town. He is the author of Stealing Empire: P2P, Intellectual Property and Hip-Hop Subversion (HSRC Press, 2008) and Static: Race and Representation in Post-apartheid Music, Media and Film (HSRC Press, 2012), which are available under open content licenses. His research interests include hip-hop, critical race theory, gender politics, political economy of the media and intellectual property. Haupt was a Spring 2010 Mandela Mellon Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute (Hutchins Center, Harvard University) and writes occasionally for news and entertainment media. He has worked on media production projects and experiments in music and spoken word performance.
